About Igloolik
Igloolik, a small Inuit hamlet in Nunavut’s Foxe Basin, has been home to Inuit for over 4,000 years and remains a living centre of culture and creativity. Today, it is known worldwide for Isuma Productions’ films and Artcirq, the Inuit circus troupe. Visitors discover Arctic adventures — dog sledding, whale watching, and the Northern Lights — woven together with the traditions and stories of the Iglulingmiut people.
History of Igloolik
Igloolik’s history spans over 4,000 years, with Pre-Dorset and Dorset peoples settling the island for its rich hunting grounds. European contact began in 1822 with Captain Parry’s expedition, followed by explorers and traders. By the 1930s, a mission and Hudson’s Bay apost marked a permanent southern presence. Despite these influences, Igloolik has remained a stronghold of Inuit culture, language, and storytelling.
