Igloolik, Nunavut, is a vibrant Inuit hamlet located on Igloolik Island in Foxe Basin, near the Melville Peninsula. The name “Igloolik” means “there is a house here,” referring to the traditional sod houses that once stood in the area-not igloos.
Although it is part of the Qikiqtaaluk region of Nunavut, the community has a mix of cultural traditions from all three regions, including Kitikmeot and Kivalliq.
With a rich history dating back over 4,000 years, the community has long been a cultural hub for the Inuit people. Igloolik is known for its strong artistic traditions. It is home to Artcirq, the only Inuit circus troupe in the world, and hosts the annual Rockin’ Walrus Arts Festival. The award-winning movie ‘Atanarjuat — The Fast Runner’ was produced and filmed here.
The community has been served by the Qiniq network since 2005. Qiniq is a fixed wireless service to homes and businesses, connecting to the outside world via a satellite backbone. The Qiniq network is designed and operated by SSI Micro. In 2017, the network was upgraded to 4G LTE technology, and 2G-GSM for mobile voice.
The town experiences extreme Arctic conditions, with winter temperatures dropping as low as -50°C with wind chill, while summers bring 24-hour daylight from May to July.
